  • Do you tear your hair out just at the thought of free motion quilting?
  • Don't even know where to start and how to get set up?
  • Scared to even try? Frightened of ruining your precious quilt tops?
  • How about investing in your learning and save money on not sending every quilt out to a Long Arm Quilter?
  • Not got the concentration levels to attend a whole day class?
  • Maybe you've had a go before but given up in exasperation....
Is that you?  Does that sound familiar?  Then I would love to help you! Over the course of 4 weeks you will gain the knowledge you need to become a confident free motion quilter.  With that new found confidence, will come joy.

In this comprehensive course I'll break it down into manageable bite sized chunks so you don't get overwhelmed.  Each week there will be a new module for you.  These will consist of short videos to watch and practice sessions and even a mini project at the end.

We'll have five LIVE Zoom sessions during the 4 weeks where you'll be able to ask me any questions you might have about the content.  (No pressure to attend if you prefer to learn on your own). These will be held on Zoom at 7pm (UK time) on the: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of October 2024. (The first 4 dates are on BST. The last session is on GMT as the clocks change here in the UK on the 27th October). Check your time zone here.

You'll be able to join a community of others joining in with the course.  Here you'll be able to share pictures of your practise pieces and encourage and celebrate with one another.  We have a community right on the learning platform and also a Sewing School Facebook group so you can choose which suits you best.

So, in a nutshell, this course is for you if you get frustrated every time you attempt free motion quilting or if you’re too scared to even try! It’ll give you the knowledge and confidence you need to elevate your quilting skills and find joy when quilting.  It's aimed at complete beginner in FMQ and so will assume no prior knowledge. I want to help you get to the place where you'll be confidently quilting your own quilts!

"I have loved the course, and have a lot more confidence about my quilting now which was what I hoped to achieve from the course. You are a great teacher and the mix of pre recorded videos and live sessions is perfect. Can't believe it's over though. Thanks again"

Why trust me with your learning?
  • Free Motion Quilting is a passion of mine - it's my favourite part of the patchwork & quilting process.  I have found that I can get so lost in free motion quilting that it reduces anxiety and makes me happy! And I want that for you too!
  • And I love teaching it to others, taking away the mystery of it and making it achievable for all!
  • I've been successfully helping people overcome their fears of free motion for the last nine years so I know I can help you too!
  • I've been successfully producing online video content for my customers for the last seven years.
Why take an online course?

Does learning how to sew or quilt online seem a bit strange to you?  Are you used to going to a sewing class at your local fabric shop?  It seemed strange for me too when I first started teaching this way.

But I promise you I have seen AMAZING results teaching this way.   I would even venture to say BETTER than teaching in person classes!  Particularly with learning the skill of Free Motion Quilting.  People find they are more relaxed learning at home, over a period of time.  They find they can learn at their own pace, rewinding the videos if they don't quite understand something.  Having time between modules to allow the information to sink in AND get adequate time to really practise, rather than just have a quick go in class.  Not having other participants watching what they are doing can take the pressure off as well. Often times when people take an all day quilting class, they leave feeling exhausted and forget what the teacher said.  Learning online, you can pause and take breaks when you like.  There are ample times and places during the course to ask your questions directly to the teacher, ensuring you get great learning support.

As a teacher it's been so wonderful to see people really learning effectively and applying their new skills to their actual projects rather than just practice pieces.

"It was extremely comprehensive and very well organised. I have only hand or machine quilted to date, thinking or saying that I didn’t like FMQ. I realise now that I was probably too frightened or didn’t have the confidence to try it. I do now, thank you very much."

So, What's Included in the Course?
  • 4 weeks of learning content - A mixture of pre-recorded video tutorials and printable handouts - you can watch the videos as many times as you need to, pressing pause and play as often as you like!  A new module is released each week for you to work through during the week when convenient for you. And the videos will be available after the 4 week course has finished for you to replay when you like. A total of almost 6 hours pre-recorded videos over the duration of the course.
  • Five Live 1 hour Q&A Webinars - your place to ask me any questions you might have - attendance is optional. These will be held on Zoom at 7pm on the following dates: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of October 2024.
  • Topics we will cover include:
  • Preparing your machine (regular domestic), your quilt and yourself;
  • Tools; Thread; Batting; Tension;
  • Common Mistakes;
  • Two basic 'All Over' designs - meander/stipple & loops;
  • Three variations of 'All-Over' designs - spiral loops; double loops & loopy hearts
  • Three 'Filler' designs - switchbacks, pebbles & figure of eight;
  • Pattern size;
  • Determining where and what to quilt;
  • Dealing with larger quilts;
  • and plenty of time practising.
  • I'm including a COMPLIMENTARY copy of my Sliced Up Pattern as the Sewing Machine Cover (& Table Runner) makes a  great practice project (pictured below).
  • BONUS: Online Community in the course portal for: sharing photos of your practise blocks with other participants; asking for advice; sharing ideas; making new friends; and being inspired and encouraged.
  • BONUS: Membership to my Sewing School Facebook Group.
  • All videos have subtitles (Closed Captions).
  • And for those that complete the project, either during the course or afterwards (no time pressure), a fun enamel pin as a memento of taking the course with me!

"Jo has managed to pitch this course in a way that it is accessible to people with a range of skills. She encourages participants & is generous in sharing her knowledge and experience that helps you to think 'I can do this'.   It is very well structured with excellent resources to refer back to & has definitely helped to demystify FMQ for me. Thank you Jo"

What You'll Need?
  • A domestic sewing machine with the capability to either lower the feed dog or cover it.
  • A darning / free motion foot - we'll talk about different types in class, but my preference is Open Toe.
  • Some solid / plain fabric and batting (preferably not polyester) to make practise sandwiches.
  • Quilting gloves
  • Thread
  • Computer, Laptop or other device to watch the video tutorials on
  • Printer to print the downloads
  • I have a recommendations page (Amazon) for all the different products I talk about and recommend.
Who Should Do This Course?
  • You should already know how to use your sewing machine.
  • You may have made a quilt before, but this isn't totally necessary.
  • You want to learn a new skill, you might have tried it before but want to try it again.
  • It's perfect for you if you are anxious about free motion quilting.
  • You don't need any prior knowledge of free motion quilting.

 "I’ve completed both of Jo’s FMQ courses. Beforehand I could manage a meander, but looking back my tension was atrocious with eye lashing all over the place and I’d inevitably resort to stitching in the ditch so I didn’t ruin my quilt.

I actually really look forward to the quilting part now rather than dreading it, I still can’t quite believe my progress over the last year. I’d be the first to sign up if Jo ever decides to do a further FMQ course with different designs, I just love the style of teaching.

"I really enjoyed the Online Confident & Joyful Free Motion Quilting Course I just completed, run by Jo. The level of content was just right and I appreciated that I could progress this at my own speed and practice in line with the video content, and the live Q&A sessions at the end of each week were really helpful, answering questions I didn't even think about asking.

  Jo's manner and voice in the video presentations are calm and reassuring and easy to follow. My confidence has grown from uncontrollable wobbly lines to be able to do more controlled and accurate patterns in defined spaces and I look forward to practicing and using my new skills in my future projects."

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Not this time, but I will run the course again so make sure you are signed up to my email newsletter list to find out when I will be launching it again.

Once you’ve paid you’ll be asked to set up a log in.  Once that’s done you’ll be able to access the portal.  You’ll automatically be emailed a receipt and log in link to my Online Sewing School (Portal), so if you didn’t set up the log in when you paid, you’ll be able to do it using the link.

Watch this short video explaining how to access the course materials.

Some security systems are causing a glitch in the system and not registering the click on the Buy button.  If this happens you have various option to buy the course: try buying on a different device; contact me to arrange a different payment method; go into your security (e.g. Kapersky) and allow data collection for this website, that seems to resolve the issue.

No problem at all!  The content will be delivered weekly but you might choose to do a little bit each day.  You might not have time to do it in the 4 weeks, that's ok as you'll have access to it after the 4 week period ends.  I guarantee access for a minimum of 6 months after signing up, however I don't put an end date on it so you'll have access to it for as long as I keep the website open.  So find a solution that works for you.  All that said, please be aware that the LIVE sessions are planned for certain points of the course, so you may want to try to have completed the lessons available at that point so you understand what I'm talking about and can ask questions about the content delivered to that point.

The other thing to say here though, is that you only get out what you put in.  In order words you will need to spend time practising a skill to improve at it.  And this particular skill is best learned if you are able to practice little and often, if you could manage 10-15 minutes a day that would be amazing and you would definitely see results quicker!  If you put the time in you will develop good habits and improve your skills.

It's important to remember that this is meant to be fun! It's your hobby and should never make you feel stressed out!  Go at your pace, you'll have access to the content for a minimum of 6 months after signing up.

No problem! You can ask your question in the Discussion Box underneath the videos.  I usually answer pretty quickly!  You can also ask me a question during one of the LIVE Q&A sessions using the chat box.  If the time doesn't suit your schedule or time zone then just be sure to email me the question ahead of time and I'll answer in the LIVE anyway.  I'm planning to record the LIVES and load them into the portal for you to watch when convenient.

Alternatively post your question in the Community Page or Facebook Group.  Either myself or one of our other lovely members is sure to be able to answer it for you. :-)

This is all listed above listed above.

Sometimes the technology decides not to do what it should!  Very frustrating!  Sorry it's happened to you.  First of all, just double check your junk/spam folder.  Also make sure to add jo@thecraftynomad.co.uk to the Safe Sender list in your email settings.  Next go to the Register Page and sign up.  Once you are in, you'll be able to click on the My Courses tab at the top.  If your enrolment was processed then the course will show up in your courses.  If it's not there or you have problems registering then just drop me an email at jo@thecraftynomad.co.uk.  It could be something as simple as a typo in the email address.

What are you waiting for?
I can't wait to help you with your FMQ!

"Thank you for so much encouragement and support. I’m so very glad I signed up for your course. Your teaching is superb and instructions so easy to follow and well organised.

Also I have learnt so much basic machine info, needle position and how the tension worked etc which has cleared up so many issues I’ve had over the years because I never really understood how things worked.   Lots of 💡 moments!!"

Great class

I've taken FMQ courses before but have not done any for many years. This course was a great refresher and offered so much new content as well. I would highly recommend the class. I hope to take her next FMQ class, too.

Now no longer scared to do FMQ

Jo's course is great if you want to do FMQ. I had tried to do some in the past but not been very successful. Having followed the course and practised on several days, didn't manage the recommended every day, I am confident to do FMQ. Jo is very thorough and the course content is excellent - both hand outs (am old school too) and the recorded videos. During the live zoom weekly session you can ask her anything about sewing. I was having a problem with rucks. The course was so good, i have now signed up to the next one. Affectionately called "Skilful and Ecstatic" by one of our group.

Just right

I have looked around at beginner courses and this was just perfect. It gave me time to learn and consolidate new skills and at the same time I could choose my own time commitments. There's lots of support and lots of room to be a little different too.

FMQ for beginners

I have loved this FMQ course. Jo is easy to listen to and I like that you can take this course at your own pace with the opportunity to revisit all the weekly themes. I have been pleasantly surprised at what I have been able to achieve. I can now say I can FMQ! A new journey and I have enrolled on FMQ Builder course. Jo is a inspiring teacher.

I am so glad that I undertook this class with Jo. I had no confidence at all to start with but she was very encouraging and broke things down into manageable steps and it gave me the courage to take the plunge and have a go! I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in trying FMQ as the lessons are clear and thorough, very professionally delivered, with enthusiasm and good humour.
