PLEASE NOTE

  • Ever wonder what people mean when they talk about different thread 'weight'?
  • Do you always sew with the same type of thread and don't know the difference between, or benefits of, cotton, polyester or rayon?
  • Have you ever got into a tangle when using metallic thread?
  • Would you love to learn how to create subtle texture using different thread weight or type?

Do any of those resonate with you?

If so, join me in this online class where I will help you learn more about thread, the benefits of using different thread weights & types, and give you the confidence to experiment and create texture in future projects.

It's a self-paced class, bookended with LIVE sessions, and includes an exclusive box of Aurifil thread to practise all that you’ve learnt!
  • This fun class will kick off with a LIVE welcome session on Zoom at 4pm (GMT) on Saturday 27th of January 2024. After which the learning content will become available to you.
  • During the following 3 weeks, you can work through the pre-recorded videos lessons at your own pace, when it suits your schedule. You'll be able to ask questions during that time using the question boxes beneath each video lesson and I will answer those daily.
  • The course will finish with a LIVE Q&A session at 4pm (GMT) on Saturday 17th of February 2024 on Zoom to go over any final questions you might have and share any projects that have been made.
  • Find out what 4pm UK time is in your time zone here.

If attending the LIVE sessions is not your preferred way to learn, that's okay! The sessions will be recorded so you can watch them at a later time. Once the course has concluded, both the pre-recorded video lessons and the recordings of the LIVEs will still be available for you to review at any time.

" Fantastic course - a must for new and experienced quilters. This is a really detailed course covering not just thread, but needles too. It has given me so much more confidence in exploring different threads. Jo is an excellent teacher and always provides comprehensive instructions and guidance."

Hannah - Thread Matters Participant

As usual for my courses, the pre-recorded video lessons are broken down into manageable bite sized chunks so you don't get overwhelmed. I've also included a mini project for you in case you want to experiment with the new threads.

You will learn:

  • Ways to add texture to projects with thread;
  • What's the difference between different types of thread (cotton, wool, rayon, metallic, polyester, variegated);
  • What thread weight means;
  • Why you should care about needles;
  • All about tension & troubleshooting;
  • Practise your new knowledge on a fun optional project
  • By the end of the class you will feel more adventurous when choosing threads for your projects, confident in the knowledge that you will have success!

The class includes:

  • A downloadable PDF printable workbook;
  • Project instructions;
  • Pre-Recorded video lessons - short videos totalling 3 hours and 45 minutes;
  • Two LIVE Q&A Sessions held on Zoom
  • Access to my Sewing School Facebook Group

Most people also choose the option to include:

  • An exclusive box of 10 Aurifil thread spools (pictured below) worth £42. Box contains: 1 spool of wool 12 weight; 2 spools of cotton 12 weight; 2 spools of cotton 28 weight; 1 spool of cotton 40 weight; 3 spools of cotton 50 weight; 1 spool of cotton 80 weight. Please choose the correct price plan for postage to your country. I have curated this thread box specifically for this course and will be demonstrating using these threads.
  •  Most people choose the option including the threads so they get the full experience and can replicate what they see in the video classes.
  • I have a very limited number of thread boxes so be sure to sign up fast so you don't miss out!

What you will need:

  • You will benefit from having various weights of cotton thread available.  I demonstrate and talk about Aurifil 12, 28, 40, 50 and 80 weight which are all included in the box mentioned above. You may also like to have some metallic, rayon, polyester, wool and variegated threads to use as well, as I will demonstrate those, and therefore you may like to have a go with some.
  • Various sewing machine needles to suit the threads: 80/12 Microtex, Universal or Quilting Needle; 90/14 or 100/16 Topstitch needle; 70/10 Microtex or Embroidery needle; Metallic Needle; and a twin needle
  • To fully participate, and, if you want to make a project, you will also need: fabric & batting to make practice sandwiches, and for the project; a sewing machine and usual sewing tools; a printer to print the pattern; and a computer with internet access to view the video classes and to attend the Zoom LIVE sessions.

Other useful information:

  • The class is suitable for confident beginners, you will already know the basics of patchwork & quilting
  • All videos have subtitles (Closed Captions)
  • Cost of class will vary depending on your location for postage costs: UK - £115; Worldwide - £125 (approx. US$153).  There is also the option to sign up without the thread box - £70  (approx. US$86).

"I really found this short course very useful. As always with Jo, there was a mix of reading material, video recordings and live sessions. All extremely instructive and it was so good to have a box of threads of different weights - usually very hard to come by. I learnt a lot and definitely feel much more confident to have a go with different threads"

I've been teaching sewing, patchwork & quilting for over 10 years and I'm excited to help you.

I have absolutely LOVED helping every single one of my customers develop and improve their sewing, patchwork & quilting skills.  It's truly rewarding to see students progress and have 'lightbulb moments'.

I love teaching, breaking topics down into bite-sized chunks and making it achievable for all!  Since moving most of my teaching online it's been eye opening to realise that most people learn better this way: working at their own pace and having more time to practise; but still getting time with the teacher to ask questions.

PLEASE NOTE

I have now completely SOLD OUT of the limited edition Aurifil thread boxes that originally came with this course.

I have added a limited number of places priced without the thread box if you still want to do the course.

You would just need to buy thread separately from your local shop or use what you already have at home.

Learnt so much

Clearly threads do matter. This course has opened my eyes to so many things to consider regarding threads and needles. Im so glad we can revisit the modules and that they are in bite size chunks which makes it easy to find. Clear handouts that can also be printed. Lovely to be given a small project to have a go at using the different threads knowing that I've got the right needle, the right bobbin thread and the correct tension and stitch size. Thank you Jo.

Very Informative

Who would have thought there would be so much difference in a reel of thread! Never knew about NE numbers or what they meant, been looking at all of mine now to see what they are, I've only just started on the project and I'm looking forward to trying them all out, also great excuse to investigate all the decorative stitches on my sewing maching. I'm also desperate to learn more about FPP. Well done Jo x

Great course!

I learned about different types of threads, needles and how to use them. There was also a project I could use and try out all the different kinds of threads and needles! I tried thick and thin thread and I also for the first time tried a twin needle! I had so much fun and realized that the shine of rayon thread probably makes it one of my favorite ones to ad something special to a project! Thank you Jo for another great course!

Great Course. So much information.

This course has made me think more about the type of thread I can use and when, and also help with the different type of needles. At the end of the course we have a project to try out our new skills and put into practice all we have learnt. I would definitely recommend it
