Pre-cut Mini Charm Packs are wonderful aren’t they? A pack of pre-cut 2.5" squares ready for you to get going straight away!

A great little timesaver, so you don’t have to spend your precious time cutting, and can get straight on to piecing. But there are two problems as I see it:
  • Fabric shops know they are perfect little add-ons to your shopping basket. They look super cute and it’s a fab way to get a little bit of a whole range of fabric. So the fabric stores place them right next to the check out to tempt you to buy them, right?! So you end up buying a heap of them with no plan as to what to do with them!
  • Pre-cuts aren’t always cut completely accurately. Sometimes they are, but other times what is sold as 2.5” squares might actually be a bit small, or perhaps a bit big, or worse still, slightly wonky. Now for a patchworker, where accurate cutting is key to making a good quilt, this can be really annoying.
Join this FREE online class to help you use your stack of mini charm packs. You'll make a cute boxy basket that will showcase all the fabrics in your favourite fabric collection. And the best bit is that you'll learn a MAGIC way to piece with perfect points EVEN if your pre-cuts are a little wonky!  It'll be as easy as saying 'ta da'!

In this free taster class you will learn:
  • How to make a boxy shaped basket
  • How to insert a lining and add handles
  • About different stabilisers
  • How to use interfacing to get perfect points
  • About the importance of using your walking foot to deal with thick substrates
  • How and when to use a 'hump jumper'

What will you use yours for?
These baskets are perfectly sized for:

  • Storing sewing tools, notions or thread spools.
  • Filling with goodies for a mini gift hamper - it's the perfect for travel size toiletries.
  • Filling with chocolates or sweets at Christmas or whenever you fancy it!
  • A place for keys and loose change.
  • Use as a bathroom caddy for small items.
  • Make one with off-cuts from a quilt project and place in your guest bedroom with items your guests might have forgotten! You could even place the quilt on the bed!
It’s going to be a really fun class and I can’t wait to see what you make.

How's it Going to Work...

We'll have a Live Welcome session on Zoom for you to get to know me (Thursday 20th July 2023 at 7pm (BST)). You'll then be able to access the Pre-Recorded video lessons over that weekend, where you will learn how to:
You'll be able to ask any questions using the question boxes inside the teaching portal. I'll answer those questions in another live Zoom session that will wrap up the class on Sunday 23rd July 2023 at 7pm (BST).  We'll have some show and tell in that wrap up session and some random prize giving! I have a few prizes up for grabs from generous sponsors, so I will choose winners at random, picked from those who have made a basket and shared a picture of it in the Facebook group!

You'll have access to the video lessons until the 24th July 2023.

Hi there! I'm Jo. I'm the owner of The Crafty Nomad, home of the Quilt Hive learning membership for quilters. I've been teaching sewing, patchwork & quilting for over 10 years and I'm excited to help you.

The best bit of my job, without a doubt, is getting to help quilters become more confident and fall in love with their hobby just a little bit more (if that's even possible!) when they start being happier with the quality of their makes!

Since moving most of my teaching online it's been eye opening to realise that most people learn better this way: working at their own pace and having more time to practise; but still getting time with the teacher to ask questions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Once you’ve signed up you’ll be asked to set up a log in if you don't already have one.  Once that’s done you’ll be able to access the portal. You’ll automatically be sent an email with class access instructions, this will include a link to set up a log in so if you didn’t set up the log in when you signed up, you’ll be able to do it using the link.

Sometimes the technology decides not to do what it should!  Very frustrating!  Sorry it's happened to you.  First of all, just double check your junk/spam folder.  Also make sure to add jo@thecraftynomad.co.uk to the Safe Sender list in your email settings.  Next go to the Register Page and sign up.  Once you are in, you'll be able to click on the My Courses tab at the top.  If your enrolment was processed then the class will show up in your courses.  If it's not there or you have problems registering then just drop me an email at jo@thecraftynomad.co.uk. It's often just a typo in the email address during sign up.

I've tried to make it so that you'll be able to use what you will already have at home. So there are heaps of possible options for what you can use. So don't worry if you don't have a Mini Charm Pack!

Supplies List
- A mini Charm Pack (pre-cut 2½” squares), or thirty two 2½” squares cut from scraps
- A fat quarter for the lining and handles
- Bosal 2.5" Watercolour Grid fusible interfacing, or any other non-grid lightweight, fusible interfacing
- Bosal In-R-Foam or Soft n Stable, batting, or fusible fleece (optional)
- Iron, Ironing surface, baking paper
- Thread, sewing machine, pins, clips

If you are stuck on a bit that just isn't making sense to you, just pop a comment in the comment box under that lesson.  I'll get a notification of it and can pop you an answer in the comments.  Keeping it there also helps other people who might be stuck on the same bit.

Yes of course you can. All of the actual teaching is via pre-recorded video lessons that will become available after the first live session. These will be available for you to watch at any point from 7pm on Thursday 1st of May 2025 until 9am on Tuesday 6th May 2025 (UK time). You can join in when it suits you or your time-zone during that time.  I will record the Welcome live and will load that asap after we finish.

You'll have access to the teaching content until 9am (BST - UK Time) on the 6th May 2025.  After that time the class will only be available in my Quilt Hive membership, so if you would like to continue having access to it beyond that date you can join Quilt Hive.

I try to keep the videos bite sized so they range from 3-13 minutes, totalling about 2 hours.
